What is age-related macular degeneration?

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a common disease that affects the central vision. As we age, the macula (the area at the center of the retina) becomes thinner, and a protein called drusen grows in clumps. Sometimes, the disease can become what is called “wet” AMD. Wet AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow behind the retina, which can cause rapid vision loss.

Treatment

There is currently no treatment for uncomplicated “dry” AMD. Patients with dry AMD will be monitored on a schedule, and if the disease transitions to wet AMD they will usually be treated with injectable medications at regular intervals. These medications can help to reduce the growth of blood vessels behind the retina.
