Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes may result in an eye disease called diabetic retinopathy, which can cause blurring, “floaters,” and vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels cause damage to blood vessels in the retina. These blood vessels can swell and sometimes leak, or they can become restricted. Sometimes abnormal, new blood vessels grow on the retina.

Treatment

Patients diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy will often be treated with injectable medications at regular intervals. These medications can help to reduce the growth of blood vessels around the retina. Patients may also be treated with laser surgery to seal leaking blood vessels. In some cases, a surgical procedure called “vitrectomy” may be advised.
