What is a macular hole?

Macular Holes

A macular hole is a small break in the central part of the retina. This area is responsible for sharp, detailed vision. When a hole develops, central vision becomes blurred or distorted, while peripheral vision usually remains normal.

Treatment

Most macular holes require vitrectomy surgery. During this procedure, vitreous gel is removed from the eye to relieve pulling on the macula, and a gas bubble is placed in the eye to gently press the edges of the hole together. Patients usually need to maintain a face-down position for several days after surgery to keep the bubble in place.
